Huawei, 5G and security: How did we end up here?

The row over the role of Hauwei in the UK’s mobile networks is the result of a complicated mix of concerns around 5G technology and big geopolitical battles.

Today the UK government is due to confirm whether the Chinese networking company will be banned from involvement in the UK’s 5G networks, with many expecting its role to be significantly reduced over the next few years.

This has been a long-running saga. US administration has argued for several years that the use of Huawei equipment in sensitive networks could leave countries at risk of being spied on by the Chinese state. Huawei has consistently denied that this could happen, and the US has not provided evidence to back up its claims.
