Washington County Upgrades Public Safety with $6.1M ARPA Investment

Washington County is poised to significantly enhance its public safety infrastructure with a substantial investment of $6.1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This pivotal funding is being channeled towards a series of critical upgrades, spearheaded by the construction of a new, state-of-the-art sheriff’s office building in Machias. The facility, designed to mitigate space constraints and boost operational efficiency, represents a strategic effort to address the evolving needs of the county’s public safety landscape. Scheduled for completion in April, this modern two-story building, costing nearly $5.5 million, will bring a host of law enforcement and administrative departments under one roof, providing a cohesive and well-organized operational environment.

The new building, meticulously planned by Port City Architecture and constructed by Sheridan Construction, marks a significant milestone in the county’s commitment to modernizing its public safety infrastructure. It will house not only the sheriff’s office but also the jail administration and other essential departments, thereby fostering improved coordination and communication among various law enforcement roles. Among its features are dedicated offices for the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, further underscoring the comprehensive nature of this upgrade. The consolidation of these key functions into a single, efficient space is aimed at streamlining operations and optimizing the delivery of public safety services.

Enhancing Jail Administration and Service Call Management

The comprehensive upgrade also extends to the jail administration, where relocated offices are expected to create additional storage, meeting spaces, and online training areas. This reorganization is a proactive response to the increasing volume of service calls, which have surged from 4,453 in 2015 to a projected 9,900 in 2024. The enhanced infrastructure aims to ensure that the county is well-equipped to manage this growing demand, providing law enforcement personnel with the resources and space needed to operate effectively.
