September 12, 2024

In a recent critique that highlights pressing local issues, Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has openly criticized the Assam state government for environmental degradation, deteriorating law enforcement, and increasing public safety concerns. His primary focus was the controversial decision to cut down trees on GS Road in Guwahati, which he described as contradictory to the Prime Minister’s global environmental initiatives aimed at combating climate change. Saikia accused top forestry officials and the state’s chief minister of engaging in deforestation activities, potentially for lucrative contracts and commissions, and disregarding warnings issued by the National Green Tribunal.

Additionally, Saikia voiced his concerns about the unrest in Sivasagar, condemning the administration’s failure to prevent escalating tensions during protests in the area. Emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations, he warned against exploiting the situation for personal and political gain. Saikia also pointed to a disturbing rise in rape cases under the current BJP rule when compared to Congress governance, questioning the government’s commitment to protecting and educating young girls. He lamented the lack of progress in establishing fast-track courts for such sensitive cases and highlighted the suspicious deaths of accused individuals while in police custody, calling for urgent legal reforms and greater police accountability.
