China’s Transport Sector Expands with Major Infrastructure Projects in 2024

December 27, 2024

In 2024, China’s Ministry of Transport reported substantial progress in key transportation initiatives, highlighting a surge in mass transportation projects. With rapid economic growth driving an increased demand for efficient transportation, the country saw an impressive 8.4 billion cross-regional trips during the Spring Festival and 2 billion trips over the National Day holiday. This resulted in an average daily transportation rate of 286 million trips. An influential factor in this surge has been the growing popularity of new energy vehicles, evidenced by 15.9% of highway traffic involving electric vehicles.

Freight transport also delivered strong performance metrics, with freight volumes projected to reach 56.5 billion tonnes, marking a 3.5% rise from the previous year. Simultaneously, port cargo throughput is anticipated to achieve 17.5 billion tonnes, reflecting a 3.4% growth. Significant infrastructure milestones were achieved, including the completion of major projects such as the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Passage, and the Chizhou-Huangshan high-speed railway. By the end of 2024, China’s railway network is expected to surpass 160,000 kilometers, with nearly 47,000 kilometers dedicated to high-speed rail.

Expanding Global Connectivity

Internationally, China has made strides in upgrading its connectivity, as seen with the China-Europe Trans-Caspian Express service and the inauguration of Chancay Port in Peru. These developments play a crucial role in enhancing global trade and transportation links. The China-Europe Trans-Caspian Express service adds to the Silk Road Economic Belt, providing an efficient land route for cargo between Asia and Europe. The launch of Chancay Port opens new trade pathways for China in South America, facilitating greater economic exchange and fostering international relations.

Moreover, these achievements reflect China’s strategic focus on boosting its global transportation footprint. By establishing pivotal routes and ports, the country not only strengthens its trade partnerships but also underscores its commitment to being a leader in international logistics. This strategic push aims to meet the rising demands of international commerce and ensure that Chinese goods have swift and reliable access to global markets, reinforcing China’s position in the global supply chain.

Future Plans for 2025

The Ministry of Transport also outlined ambitious plans for 2025, with a continued emphasis on expanding both domestic and international connectivity. Major projects set to commence include the construction of new high-speed rail lines and further development of port infrastructure, strategically aimed at bolstering economic growth and facilitating smoother trade routes. The focus will also remain on the integration of new energy vehicles into the transport sector, as part of China’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. By maintaining this momentum, China aims to set new benchmarks in transportation infrastructure and solidify its leadership position in global logistics.
