The National Institute of Standards and Technology issued a draft publication late last month that will help federal enterprise email administrators, information security specialists and network managers better safeguard email.
The guidance, Draft NIST Special Publication 800-177 (pdf), offers an overview of technologies to deter phishing schemes and prevent the leak of confidential information via email. It also provides deployment guidance and describes emerging protocols “to make email security and privacy easier for end users,” said an Oct. 6 press release.
Specifically, the document recommends agencies deploy domain-based authentication protocols for email and encryption for email contents.
